What to Expect in Your First Psychology Session

Your first psychology session can feel daunting, especially if you are not sure what to expect. Here is a practical walkthrough so you know exactly what happens.

Before the session

When you book, the practice will typically ask for:

  • Your name and contact details
  • Your Medicare card or DVA card number (or relevant scheme details)
  • Confirmation of your referral or Mental Health Care Plan (if applicable)
  • Brief information about what you would like to discuss

If you are unsure what information to provide, just ask when you book.

During the session

Your first session (usually 50–60 minutes) is an assessment and intake session. Your psychologist will:

  1. Introduce themselves and explain how sessions work, confidentiality, and what to expect
  2. Ask about what brought you in — what has been happening, how long, and how it affects your daily life
  3. Ask about your history — your background, previous mental health support, medical history, and any relevant life events
  4. Discuss your goals — what you would like to achieve through therapy
  5. Suggest a treatment approach — what type of therapy might suit you (e.g. CBT, EMDR, schema therapy)

You do not need to prepare anything in advance. Just be yourself and share what feels comfortable.

After the session

Your psychologist may:

  • Suggest strategies to try before your next session
  • Recommend a review with your GP if more sessions are needed
  • Schedule your next appointment
  • Explain how billing works (if you are seeing a bulk-billing psychologist, there is nothing to pay)

A note on billing

If you booked through ClearAccess and the psychologist is listed under your scheme, your session should be bulk billed or scheme billed with no out-of-pocket cost. It never hurts to confirm this at the start of the session.

Remember

The first session is about building rapport. It is normal to feel nervous. Psychologists are trained to make you feel comfortable, and you are in control of what you share.
